Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5
Noise isolating earphones are big business with hundreds of styles on offer from all major manufacturers, and the Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5 are just one example on offer from the lovely people at Logitech, who are rapidly becoming market leaders in the race to be the best. There is one catch here that will bother some of you, not others, and that is the price. The Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5 hit the market at a massive $170, and these are not their most expensive earphones by far. So, if you can justify spending hundreds on you earphones, could this be the set for you? You know the score by now. We review – you decide.

Design
As with most of the earphones in the Logitech Ultimate Ears range, these earphones are definitely eye pleasing. Small and compact, they come in black or dark red with a silver inlaid finish, and as is also common with Ultimate Ears, the right phone has the red banding to make identification possible with just a quick glace, and doesn’t spoil the overall look. The wire has been designed to be worn in two ways. Firstly, hanging straight down from the ear, and secondly for a more secure sports fit the ear bud can be positioned in the upright position so that the wire can loop over the ear and act more like a sports earphone. When we did this and set off round the office at a slow jog, it did seem to be more secure than the other way – so we were impressed.
In the box, you get the more expensive earphone silicone ear bud set, which features a set of small, medium and large ear buds in white, and four comfort fit silicone ear tips to really get the best fit possible. And, you will be pleased to know replacement sets are on offer should you happen to lose a vital bit. The Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5 earphones come with a tough black plastic case, which enables you to store the earphones in such a way that they aren’t tangled amongst the rest of the things in your handbag or pocket. Finally there is the earphones cleaner, which is a tiny tool to make cleaning unwanted earwax out of the silicone ends a breeze, if somewhat grim! Overall the Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5 earphones are aesthetically pleasing and will look great teamed with the trusty iPod when you are out and about.
“If you are in the market for some ear buds with very high sound quality and extreme noise isolation you will be quite satisfied with these. I’m not even kidding if I have these on and I’m listening to music, even at a lower volume, I cannot hear someone next to me screaming. I would say I’m not a huge fan of the silicone tips but the foam tips are amazing. The silicone tips aren’t bad or anything but they tend to fall out a lot easier. I would also note that you get four sizes of the silicone tips as opposed to only two foam.” – B.Hodge (CO,USA)
Performance
The Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5 earphones are the first to showcase the unique top-fire armature design, which Logitech claims ‘Ensures a snug, noise-isolation fit every time with extended high-frequency response and a full soundstage’, and we have to say the fit was nice and tight and did prevent any extraneous noises getting through. All we were left with was the music itself and the quality was excellent. We were particularly impressed with the bass on offer as this is something that is hard to get right when all you have is two tiny speakers in the ears, but the Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5 did well and we are impressed.
It is perhaps no surprise that Logitech can do what most other earphone manufacturers have struggled with as they started out, and of course still do: make supplies for the professional sound recording studio market where the sound quality really does matter – and they have scaled down to the consumer market with impressive results. The audio quality is really second to none and we really are beginning to see the merit of spending well over $100 of our hard earned geek dollars on a set of earphones when the quality is this good. The distortion was minimal and thanks to the noise isolation technologies we didn’t really need the volume that loud either to fully enjoy the performance from our favorite tunes selection, even when walking through next to the rush hour traffic.
Conclusion
If you are looking for a top of the market set of earphones, primarily for your iPhone, iPod or Blackberry then the Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5 earphones by the lovely crew at Logitech could well be the choice for you. The round, smooth lines make them very pleasing to the eye, and the performance is really very polished. Take these earphones on the commute to work and you will be impressed with how much external noise they cut out. Just remember you are wearing them when it comes to negotiating roads when it is important to hear traffic noise!
Actual User Reviews:
• “My pair of UE Super.Fi 5′s arrived about a week ago, and so far I agree with the other (unanimous) 5-star ratings. The musical resolution you get through these is incredible. I’ve been finding myself listing to music that was no longer in my main playlist rotation just so I can hear what new details emerge. I’ve owned several of the lower end (so to speak) Shure’s prior to these, and while I was happy with them (except the SE110′s I had most recently) so far these seem superior. They’re also very light and look good!” – A.Baer (MN,USA)
• “I just got these yesterday. I have been using Shure E3c earbuds for quite some time and thought they were amazing. The key word being “thought” I tried these out last night and am amazed at how much bass I was missing from the Shure’s. The UE’s are superior in all aspects. I am especially impressed with the build quality of the earbuds. They seem to be very solid compared with the Shure’s, which broke and is why I purchased these. I am very impressed with sound and build quality of these.” – R.Fisher (USA)
