Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5 EB
Yet more earphones are flooding the market and the latest on offer from Logitech forms part of their Ultimate Ears collection and are the Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5 EB. These are the bad boys of the fold. These will set you back $200 and are the Extended Bass model, which is like going and standing in the middle of the nightclub and getting that full pumping base sound. However, with so many companies jostling to be the top of the earphone market, is there enough on offer here to justify the whopping price tag from Logitech, or is this just a bit too much money for not a lot of performance? You know how it works by now. We review – you decide.

Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5 EB
Design
Black, black and more black combines here to give the Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5 EB their bad boy look. They are mean, they are angry and they are tiny, ensuring a perfect fit in the ears. They are designed to be worn with the wire looped up and over the ear to give the sports performance fit that is vital if you don’t want to suffer the annoyance of having to keep reseating the ear buds as you move. We are told it works really well. We sent the office junior off to test this bit whilst we stayed in the warm with hot coffee and cookies – it was his opinion that the close fit of the ear buds combined with the wire over the ear made these a good choice for the more active listener – and we think he will make junior reviewer soon as we are impressed. In the box with the Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5 EB is the top of the range ultimate kit, which features the sexy metal box to stow away the earphones when not in use, and is tiny enough to fit into a pocket or bag and not get in the way. As is standard with the Logitech earphones you get the full set of silicone ear pieces, including small, medium and large, and because this is part of the elite range you get the added four silicone ear tips so you really can get that perfect fit that means that the ear buds are sealed and you are not interrupted by external noises.
Another Logitech standard is the red band on the right ear piece which allows for easy identification, and also in the box we found a 1/4″ adaptation jack – which is perfect for the home stereo set up. Don’t forget the Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5 EB are 3.5mm jack as standard – which is still perfect for iPods, iPhones and Blackberry devices, and you also get the Sound Level Attenuator which in their words ‘Lowers the overall volume levels for noisy sound sources.’
“These headphones rock. They produce plenty of bass without being muffled or dark. Fit is everything and getting the proper fit is crucial for these babies to perform. Although getting a good fit isn’t that difficult, it is important. Stick your fingers in your ears, like you were blocking out all sound and that is what you should have when you properly insert these headphones into your ear. They will sound great and not be uncomfortable if inserted correctly. They give me the bass I was missing with most other units and they sound great on the high end too. If you have an EQ on your player, then you will be in heaven trying to find the perfect setting. I use them on my iRiver Clix and it’s like a whole new player with these phones. They are expensive, but worth it if you want some more LOWS. I highly recommend these. I agree that you won’t be disappointed with your purchase.” – S.Lay (USA)
Performance
The Extended Base is obviously Logitech’s big selling point with these earphones, and inside the tiny casing is an equally tiny subwoofer, which is what gives the bottom end its power and kick, plus the normal dedicated speaker which takes care of the middle and top end range of sounds. Overall we think they have combined the two perfectly and we are impressed. The tech sheet claims a simply stunning 16dB of isolation and passive noise cancellation, and we have to say it was looking good when we went to the noisiest places we could find. The music remained clear and crisp and the distractions of the real world were not allowed to filter through – again, pretty good really.
You get a 1 year limited warranty with the Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5 EB earphones, and to be honest if the lovely men in lab coats at Logitech are happy to offer that, then we feel that they must be pretty confident that these are going to last and give rise to relatively few problems. The input jack is gold plated which enhances the performance, and again this is becoming something of standard on the elite range from Logitech. Remember, they really are charging big prices for their kit.
Conclusion
These are going to appeal to the younger generation or anyone who really enjoys the bass element of their music. They look a little bit naughty and not something you would want to take home and introduce to your parents, which definitely gives them appeal. In terms of performance Logitech rarely fail to impress. This is what they do and they do it very well indeed. If you have the money to spend on earphones that really kick butt then the Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5 EB could well be the choice for you.
Actual User Reviews:
• “As a vigilant user of headphones I was hesitant of using buds, so I did my research and found these bad boys. I wanted bass and that is exactly what I got, in spades. I will admit that there is slight learning curve of how to properly put these buds in your ears, but that can be fixed by reading the manual. The only trouble I had with the headphones was getting the right fit, which is essential. I found out that one has the put the buds in their ear and then gently rock them back and forth until they stay put ad you get the true bass experience. These buds also deter aby sound from getting into your ear. I have used these on a bus, sitting next to the heater and still heard nothing. The price also was a factor, if you buy these from Amazon and look for the other sellers, you’ll find there are some sold for as little as $178.88, which a lot better than the usually $200.00. My overall unqualified reccomendation is buy these because they will not let you down and are of high quality. “ -D.Press-Dawson (CA,USA)
• “I am a DJ from Louisville, KY and I recently purchased these when my old headphones gave out, and this is the best investment I have ever made. These have wonderful sound quality and block out ALL ambient noise. I had a monitor blasting nothing but High noise against my head, and I never once noticed it. When I would take off the one earphone it would hurt to hear the monitor, but when I put it back in, nothing but the track I was cueing up. Even if you only mix with one ear, these would probably protect your hearing in that ear, as you don’t have to blast the headphone volume to match the monitor. I recommend these to any audiophile looking for the perfect set of travel earphones, or to any DJ wanting to protect their hearing. These, and a set of musicians earplugs will ALWAYS go in my gig bag.” – W.Wyatt (KY,USA)
