Ultimate Ears MetroFi 170vi
There is a vast array of earphones on the market and by far the popular choice at the moment are the ultimate ear noise reduction earphones, which cut down the amount of noise that can come in from external sources and spoil your listening pleasure. The Ultimate Ears MetroFi 170vi are a good example of entry level dual-purpose earphones and retail at just over $50, making them extremely affordable and putting them in high demand.

Design
We know that Logitech make stylish products, and these earphones are no exception. The Ultimate Ears MetroFi 170vi are lightweight and bulk-free, which is very desirable as if you have a small device like an iPod you really don’t want to add to the size with massive headphones. The wires are all black and the ear cushions are made of clear silicone, and as is standard with Logitech there are three different sizes in the pack to choose from so you can be sure to get the closest, most comfortable fit for you. Again we see the red banding on the right ear bud making it easily identifiable, as the left is clear silicone banding. The earphones come with the rigid plastic case that really is a godsend, as it means that you can prevent the dreaded wire knots yet still have relatively little to carry around with you. Again this is a standard 3.5mm jack, which means we can’t really think of a product that you won’t be able to use these with. Certainly all iPods, iPhones and Blackberries are going to work with these.
“The bottom line is these are good quality phones and, for the price a great value. They work perfectly with an iPhone 3G, sound great, and allow you to control hands-free calling functions without touching your phone. The only thing I would liked to have seen is a volume control on the cable. The best part about these earphones is the sound. It’s remarkably clear, rich, and has a great range. They also do a great job of blocking out external noise. There are three different sizes of soft silicon ear gels (that are easily changed) so they should fit well. Even with a mic and and a pause/call answer control it’s light weight and doesn’t tug. The no-tangle cable is nice, the included case is handy, and the color coding showing which is the right ear bud is a nice idea. With these phones you know which is the right ear bud because it’s the one with the mic a few inches down. The handsfree mic produces perfectly acceptable sound quality. There is a small button on the cable that will pause playback, accept a call, and end a call that is in progress.” – R.S.Tobias (VA,USA)
Performance
This is where the ‘vi’ part of the Ultimate Ears MetroFi 170vi comes into play and what we mean by dual purpose, as these earphones really have been designed to work with a mobile phone device such as the iPhone or Blackbery. You can happily listen to your music, but thanks to the built in microphone can switch at the touch of a button over to voice mode and take a hands-free call on your device, which really is excellent for the busy commuter who may need to attend to some business when on way to the office for example. These are Logitech’s budget microphone earphones, and for the money we are struggling to find a serious rival for the Ultimate Ears MetroFi 170vi as these do seem to tick all the boxes in terms of style and comfort. We have to say the level of performance was good, as these did offer a clear and crisp sound which meant we didn’t feel we needed to keep turning the volume up and risk harming the hearing. You do need to remember that these are noise reduction earphones so extra care should be taken when crossing roads for example, as you really may not hear something coming that you would otherwise hear with none noise reduction sets. Again, as seems to be standard with these earphones you get a 1 year limited hardware warranty which gives you some confidence that these are going to last, and should you be unfortunate enough to lose one of your silicone ear cushions don’t despair as they are available to purchase as a separate extra.
Actual User Reviews:
• “I got these ear phones to use with my blackberry and I was very pleasantly surprised. They were provided a very comfortable fit in my ear and the sound quality was exceptional. I have used these headphone as a hands-free headset as well as to listen to music and have had a great experience with both uses. The earphones come with a small plastic case that is handy and easy to open and close. I would highly recommend these earphones as they are provide great quality for the price. “ – K.B.Hirsh (CT,USA)
• “I have been trying to find the right set of earphones for about a year now and thought I would give these a shot. For $60, I’m finding these to be pretty superb but not perfect. They fit comfortably and don’t fall out, which is a big plus for me because I will run or bike great distances and need to keep them plugged in the entire time. The sound and range is so-so and is really the only complaint I have about this product. The noise isolating design is nice when I want to listen to music or audio books while blocking out other sounds. I found I needed to spend over $100 to get the benefits I was looking for, but when compared to other earphones in this price range or even those that are cheaper, I would rate this very high. For the money, it gives you a lot of bang for the buck. But if you are looking for the perfect pair, then these are not it and I would recommend an entirely different class of earphones.” – J.Duckett (USA)
